Given the cavils against this toy, I still maintain this is a great playset. Correct, you don't get a Zurg figure. But you do get a very good Buzz figure who fits on a detachable space ship. This toy is expensive, but it's well-made. It also lights up and talks, and has lots of pieces you can attach various places that actually do things. There's a telescope that actually magnifies, a launcher that shoots a little missle, an elevator you can move up and down. It's a double sided playset for more value. There's a very odd jail cell with a trap door on top, a clear door to see in, and a stretchy door.
This playset is only about a foot high by eight inches wide, but the jail cell folds out to make it about fifteen inches wide. In the '80s, it seemed that every action figure line included a very large playset, such as G.I. Joe or He Man's Castle Grayskull. Everything got very small with MicroMachines and micro playsets, reflecting the fact that many people live in apartments which don't have much extra room, and also to make very portable playsets. This set is sort of a compromise. However, the current toy scene is very different from the '80s and '90s. Action figures are everywhere and are quite expensive. Most of the accompanying playsets are even more expensive and not well made. Many of the space themed sets are merely retreads of other adventure hero sets, pretending the cars and tanks are now "space" cars and tanks. Disney/ Pixar's Buzz Lightyear was a spaceman from the word go, and his playset reflects that.
Many recent playsets are also made of exploded, air-filled plastic, and completely lack any realism. The Interplanetary Headquarters is made of hard plastic. There are stickers you can apply, but even without them, it's very colorful. Having recently bought two other playsets which will remain unnamed, I find this set far better designed, and with far more thought for play value. It does seem an oversight that you don't get Zurg, but other than that this set seems to me to be quite well done.
