My son got this for his second birthday from his grandma, and at first I was skeptical. It seemed like a toy for a much younger kid! But he Loooooooves it! He's old enough to not only sort the shapes, but to open and close the clasp on the side, and pick it up and carry it around like a little briefcase. He quickly learned he had to get all the shapes perfectly into their spots in order to get it to close. We use it to teach the basic shapes (circle, triangle and square, though my husband likes to confuse the situation by using the proper three-dimensional shape names instead) and colors -- it's not so good for teaching animals, because they're distorted into the shapes. We also use it as a "go-toy", because it's convenient to take with you, durable, and it's easy to make sure you have all the pieces when you're ready to leave.
