Squawkers McCaw is our second involuntary subjection to the world of FurReal friends. And I've got to hand it to them on this one. Unlike the Fur Real Friends Kitty Cat White, which we received the year before, this bird bears a fantastic resemblance to his namesake. I dare say he's almost attractive, and in fact he is even allowed a prominent display on the bookshelf. He's not a terrible bird.... When his batteries are removed.
When activated, he does as is advertised. He's as witty as he's programmed to be, he's as energetic as batteries will allow, and definitely sassier than a toaster. He's only unpredictable because it would take more time than I personally am willing to spend being subjected to his raunchy farts and burps and nerve-rattling obscenely-loud squawks to master his accompanying remote control so as to know how to provoke each belch, fart and witty remark.
Unlike the cat version, I don't think I would have left his batteries in even if he had a volume control, which by the way, he should. The intensity of the sound level in this toy is such that I deducted 3 stars purely because I think it's loud enough to damage a child's hearing. Particularly when being held and hugged and cuddled. Nonetheless, I actually find him to be quite annoying, and would find him to be so at any audible level.
He does seem to have slightly less injured-terminator-sounding whirs and clicks than his predecessor. And his movements seem slightly more fluid, or at least well-suited to a parrot. He doesn't drop 'scabs' like our white Furreal cat, and in fact his 'feathers' have held up quite well considering he gets a fair amount of abuse.
In fact, if not for the fact that he's insanely loud and makes me want to claw my eardrums out, he'd be a fine toy. Which is to say if you like this sort of thing: fairly well-made mechanical talking birds that also happen to belch and fart, and don't mind suffering a little hearing loss (or perhaps need the extra volume because of existing hearing loss) then I'd definitely recommend this toy.
